Cords and braids were commonly used to decorate garments in the Viking Age. These ornaments have been found on the upper hem of apron dresses, along the front edges of women’s coats, on hats and most likely on several other garments as well, even though we have found no certain evidence of this. It is worth noting that in cases where tablet woven bands have been found along the upper hem of apron dresses, there is a string attached to the hem above the band.

All cords and braids examined by the author have been made in woollen yarn of different weights. In most cases, we do not know anything about the colours used for these cords, but one could assume that decorative details on clothing were more brightly coloured than the clothing fabric itself.

The 15-page booklet is in A5 format.
